Production the Ingmar Bergman Foundation

Duration 28'

Cast Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Ingmar Bergman, Victor Sjöström

"Images from the Playground" is the first of two films - written and directed by Stig Björkman - that combine Ingmar Bergman's behind-the-scenes footage with voice recordings of Bergman, newly recorded interviews with actors Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson, and a special introduction by Martin Scorsese.

In the early 50s, Ingmar Bergman got himself a cine camera, a 9.5 mm Bell & Howell, which he often used both privately and in his work. Images from the Playground draws upon this body of footage to create a rich and varied portrait of one of the greatest cinematic artists of all time. These images from the director’s grown-up playground are accompanied by Bergman’s own commentaries from various interviews. While actresses Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson – exposed to Bergman’s loving eye in these lavish documentary sequences – also contribute with vivid personal accounts.
The behind the scenes material has been registered with UNESCO's Memory of the World since 2007

The Norwegian Terje bravely attemps to row across the sea, sneaking through a blockade of war ships, to save his family from starvation. He nearly succeeds, but gets captured, and his world is changed forever.

The screening is accompanied by a unique live-performance by Swedish composer and musician Matti Bye who has composed a new score to the film.

Matti Bye has worked on several productions at Dramaten, the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, including those of Ingmar Bergman and Robert Lepage.

Since 1989 he has been silent film pianist at the cinemateque in Stockholm and toured Sweden and overseas as silent film accompanist and theatre musician.
